A section of Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich, Conn. Police are investigating a robbery caught on video by a bystander, after police said a woman was followed by two men out of a store who tried to forcibly rob her.

GREENWICH — Police say they are investigating a video that has been posted online showing the attempted robbery of a woman on Greenwich Avenue this week.

Greenwich police said a bystander intervened, helping the woman and her family member fend off the robbers Monday afternoon.

The 16-second video, posted to Twitter on Tuesday, shows a man and a woman struggling with a male suspect in a pink hooded sweatshirt. The man in the hoodie breaks away from the two individuals, running across the street as a male bystander pursues him on foot.

The bystander is seen on the video catching up to the suspect across the street at an outdoor dining area and the two men fall to the ground as they wrestle with each other.

The video appears to have been filmed by another bystander from inside a nearby restaurant. Patrons can be heard exclaiming in shock as the two men grapple with each other on the ground.

The man in the hoodie is able to get loose as the bystander who chased him appears to put his hands up to protect his face. The man in the hoodie then jogs away, clutching a phone in his hand.

The other assailant police said was involved in the robbery does not appear to be seen on the video.

The video from the encounter was shared on Twitter by the Greenwich Republican Town Committee, which used it to attack Democrats on crime.

Greenwich Police Capt. Mark E. Zuccerella said Wednesday the department is aware of the video and the detective division is “working leads at this time.”

Police said the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Monday when a woman was leaving a Greenwich Avenue store after purchasing electronic items. According to the town’s police blotter, it took place at the Apple store at 356 Greenwich Ave.

As she was exiting the store, two men followed her outside and “attempted to forcibly take the items that the victim had just purchased,” police said.

Police said the woman tried to physically stop the robbery with the help of a family member.

“A good Samaritan also came to their aid and assisted with fending off the two suspects,” police said in a statement released Monday evening. “The two suspects gave up and were last observed running south on Greenwich Avenue and entered a silver sedan on Grigg Street.”

Greenwich police said no weapons were used in the robbery, but the woman sustained minor injuries during the encounter and was transported to the hospital.

Police said the male suspects were described as tall and thin under the age of 30.

“One was wearing dark clothing and the other was wearing dark pants and a pink hooded sweatshirt,” police said.

On Wednesday, it was business as usual at the Apple store, with a security guard on duty inside.

Store employees referred inquiries to the Apple corporate communications office in California. There was no immediate comment from the public affairs office Wednesday.
