A video captured the chaotic scene Saturday morning on I-270 Southbound as two men engaged in a fight in the middle of the interstate, ripping shoes off each other and narrowly avoiding being struck by vehicles trying to drive around the bizarre scene.

Firearms were drawn by bystanders during the incident that occurred around 8 a.m., according to a Gahanna police report.

Ohio roads: 100 mph-plus speeding continues even as traffic volume back to normal

The video, filmed by tractor-trailer driver Jon Castiaux as he was stopped in traffic, shows two men — one in a black hoodie and another in a blue and white t-shirt — appearing to be struggling in the middle lanes of I-270 southbound near Exit 37/ Hamilton Road in Gahanna.

Castiaux said when he was pulling up to the stopped traffic he saw people running around and initially thought there was an auto accident and someone was administering CPR or something.

“As I came to a stop, that’s when I seen punches and kicks flying,” Castiaux said.

Castiaux was on the phone with his friends, and said he began recording to prove to them that what he was telling them was actually happening in the middle of an interstate.

“After eight years of driving you think you see it all,” Castiaux said. “Then something else comes along and surprises you.”

In the video, the men on the ground get up, and continue to hit and kick each other in the middle lanes of the interstate.

Meanwhile, some drivers began passing the two men on the right and left sides of the highway and they narrowly avoided being hit as they continued fighting along I-270.

Then, the man in the black sweatshirt breaks off the fight, and begins running from the man in the striped shirt, who begins chasing him.

A red truck attempts to drive past the fight, narrowly avoiding the man in the black sweatshirt as he swerves into another lane.

According to the Gahanna police report, several bystanders stopped in traffic by the fight drew firearms and told the two men to stop fighting. Witnesses told police that led the men to run to the side of the road to continue fighting.

The two men continue to run along the highway until the video ends. In a second video recorded by Castiaux, the man in the blue shirt appears to still be standing near a red car in an emergency vehicle turnaround in the middle of the interstate. Another appears hunched over and panting on the I-270 northbound side.

“They must have been at it for a while. They both looked tired,” Castiaux said.

When Gahanna police officers arrived, they reported finding one of the participants bleeding from the face, scrapes on his knees, and he did not have shoes on, according to a police report.

Police reported that man smelled strongly of alcohol and told officers that he had been beat up and they should catch the other participants.

When officers asked if he knew the other primary combatant, police reported he provided conflicting answers and told medics some of the injuries were from the day prior.

After refusing to identify himself to police, he was arrested, according to the police report.

Gahanna Deputy Chief Jeff Lawless said 33-year-old Abdulfatah Musse, of Blacklick, was arrested and charged with a minor misdemeanor charge of pedestrian on a freeway.

Some others who were apparently involved in the incident, including the other primary combatant seen in the video, had already left the scene and those who were on scene refused to cooperate, he said.

Lawless said it appeared the participants knew each other. During the arrest, Musse told arresting officers to take him to where the other participants were so he could continue fighting them.
